What do kids think of DST?

The following are comments made by my students as they reflect on the power of DST

“For me doing this digital story helped me cope with my grandmother’s death a little easier. I am very proud of my story because I actually went through a lot of debating on the story I wanted to write about. There have been a lot of times in my life that I have been changed by the outcome but I really didn't feel comfortable sharing that for the whole class. This time, I did. And I’m glad I did.”

“I’m really glad that I got to share something that has made a huge impact in my life in a positive way verses it always being so negative. This project has just made me more of an out spoken person.”

“I learned how much work it takes for people to make movies. My movie was only 2 minutes and it was only pictures image a movie that has moving people and that is much longer.”

“Through this process I believe that I gained more confidence in my work. Most of the projects I do for school I just try to get done and get a good grade. This one was different though. This was my masterpiece of emotion, my thoughts on a topic that has changed my life. I didn't want to make this good, I wanted to make it great, and I think I did that to the best of my ability. This story is a part of me and I am proud to say that. I am very proud of my video, if you watch it, you can get a sense of what kind of person I am and what my values and goals in life are.”

“Instead of scrap booking a event you can just make a digital story and that's even more memorable. I think the next time I make one I'll try to make my voice sound better I think I could have done a better job on the sound track too. I am proud of my story though I'll always keep it because the dog I talked about in it has passed away now and that's a good memory to keep of her.”

“I think that the digital storytelling was an interesting and new way to tell a story. Since most of us today are used to holding conversations with other people more than we are used to writing formal papers, the digital story telling project was a nice way to sort of combine the two. It was a formal paper written about a time in the past about a specific event, but it was spoken as if you were telling a story to a small group of friends. “

“You really have to think long and hard about what you're writing so that your music and images make sense.”

“DST is a great way to express how you’re actually feeling instead of just reading a paper that you wrote. Adding music and pictures really helps other people to see and understand where the writer is coming from. I know from the few we have seen that them just standing in front of the class reading there stories would not have been enough. There stories would not have made sense without their pictures and music.”

“Over all I enjoyed my photo story project because it made me remember about my family’s heritage and were i came from.”
